Workbox’s WordPress video plugin lets you show multiple thumbnails from YouTube or Vimeo videos on a single page, then plays the videos right on the same page. You can add as many videos as you like, and customize titles, descriptions, order and more.

Here’s the plugin:

Here’s our sample page (no formatting done): http://blog.workbox.com/test-video-plugin/

Here’s how it looks on UC Santa Cruz’s Grow A Farmer website (http://www.growafarmer.org/videos/):

Grow a farmer YouTube and Vimeo videos

You’ll notice that it shows both YouTube and Vimeo videos.

How it works:

1. To add a video to a page: -> WordPress Admin panel -> Videos -> Add New
2. Enter the URL of the video (for example: http://vimeo.com/30967973 or http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IytNBm8WA1c), title and description.
3. The plugin analyzes your video to see if it’s a YouTube or a Vimeo file.
4. The plugin requests the video from YouTube or Vimeo via API.
5. YouTube returns data in XML format. Vimeo returns jSon encoded data.
6. The plugin parses the returned data to get the video file, the title, the tags and the thumbnail.
7. The thumbnails are automatically sized and the video is served in a Lightbox.

Easy!

Here’s what the admin interface looks like.

First, the video listing and sort order page interface:

The specific video addition and information page:

To install the Workbox WordPress video plugin:

Download the plugin, put it into the Plugins directory on your server, then activate it in the Plugins page of the Admin panel. Then go to Options and select which page you want to put the video gallery in.

Love the gallery but the Lightbox does not appear. Clicking on the video link launches a full-size window that shows 1/4 of the total image. I am using WordPress 3.4.1 and all other video plugins are deactivated. Send help quick! Thanks.

  2. Ann says:

This is so useful, the instructions are easy and great pictures. Thank you for sharing

  3. Dinipc says:

Only the first video gallery link works – the rest give issues. Here is the live website link – http://www.myhomeindia.org/new/videos/

  4. Paula says:

I published 10 videos from Vimeo to a new page and the links and play buttons don’t work. I haven’t made the page visible yet-it’s called Our Work. I just upgraded to WordPress 3.4.2, in case that’s a problem. I run on an older Mac and I tried it with Firefox and Safari, same result.

  5. Rob says:

Hi , your video gallery plugin is one of the few that can finally share the video title on facebook properly while using it in a video gallery mode. It worked fine on firefox, but the video doesn’t show up on a safari browser. Do you have any tips for making it work on safari.

    Thank-you

  6. eweidner says:

Rob, Thank you for your note and letting us know about this issue. We’ll look into it right away!

  7. Rob says:

Hi, I got it to play in Safari by using the original youtube player option in the player. Is there an option to order videos? Right now new videos added to the gallery list are at the bottom of the page instead of at the top.

  8. eweidner says:

    Clever work around!

I’ll ask the team to get an answer to your sorting question.

    Eric

  9. How do you embed the shortcode in a post? I can seem to get the [workbox_video_YV_list] to work

  10. Claudia says:

Hi! Thank you for the plugin!
I’ve just a question, if I would create more than one gallery, how can I get the shortcodes for the single gallery?

    thank you!
    Claudia

  11. eweidner says:

At this time you can’t use a shortcode. However, if you’re looking at using it for posts, we’re adding that feature soon.
We’ll look into a shortcode feature, too.
Thank you for your feedback – we appreciate it!

  12. Cinnamon Harrington says:

I, am interested in placing a video not just in its gallery page but on other pages as well. When you talk about shortcodes being added – how soon might that be? Thank you!

  13. Claudia says:

    Hi eweidner!
Thanks for your reply. So, I will waiting for the new feature! ;)

I have another question, I need the editor role to manage the galleries but I didn’t find any option about it. I would like to create a new capability for the editor role, could you help me?

    Thank you!
    Claudia

  14. Carlos says:

    Hi!
Is there a way to resize the video with specific dimensions?

    Thank you!
    Carlos

  15. jim says:

    Hello!
I want to create more than one gallery, how can I get the shortcodes for the each single gallery?

  16. Damien says:

Trying out the plugin and it looks great. Very straight forward and intuitive to use.

One small issue I encountered in a development environment with WP_DEBUG set to True:

Notice: Undefined variable: flag in [(my install path)]\wp-content\plugins\workbox-video-from-vimeo-youtube-plugin\workbox_video.php on line 128 Notice: Undefined variable: html in [(my install path)]wp-content\plugins\workbox-video-from-vimeo-youtube-plugin\workbox_video.php on line 143

    Thank you!

  17. eweidner says:

Damien, Thanks for letting us know – super helpful! We’re in the middle of a big project so might be a few weeks before we can update you. Thanks again, Eric

  18. Nat @Workbox says:

Damien, the ‘undefined variable’ error has been fixed now! Thanks for your patience!

  19. Nat @Workbox says:

Patrick, you can put it this way on the page: [workbox_video_YV_list gallery_name="Your Gallery Name"]

  20. Adrian says:

I can change the way of viewing the pop up and slide video to video?

  21. eweidner says:

Adrian, This sounds like a very cool idea. I’m not sure we’re going to work on this specific feature ourselves in the near future, so you might give it a shot yourself. If you do or find any good resources to help with that, please let us know!

  22. Jen says:

I am trying out your plugin, and using the code above with one of my own Vimeo channels, it’s displaying the thumbnails double. Any idea why? http://seeds.sps.springfield.ma.us/test/

  23. Jen says:

Nevermind, delete that comment above please, it’s a different plugin that’s not working, not yours! :)

  24. David says:

Hello Guys. I am having issues installing this plug in… See the code i receive when trying to install it from the back end of my WP site.

    Downloading install package from http://downloads.wordpress.org/plugin/workbox-video-from-vimeo-youtube-plugin.zip…

    Unpacking the package…

    Installing the plugin…

The package could not be installed. No valid plugins were found.

    Plugin install failed.

Does anybody have an idea what might be the issue? Thanks in advance.

  25. eweidner says:

We’ll check it out and get back to you as soon as we can. Eric

  26. Nat@Workbox says:

David, sorry about that – we have fixed the bug now. Please try again and let us know if the issue still exists on your end!

  27. David Mejia says:

Hello Guys. Thank you so much for fixing the issue while downloading the plugin. Now i have another issue and need your help. When i tried to play one of the videos on the gallery it opens up a full screen so you can only see 1/4 of the video… How can i fix this issue? Your help and time will be greatly appreciated.

  28. Greg says:

Hello, great plugin took me ages to find, but so glad I did.

One question how can I increase the size of the thumbnails? There are just a little to small for my page.

    Thanks, Greg

  29. Paul says:

Hi, great plug in functionality – however, the lightbox size for Safari is tiny and unuseable. Is there a way to force the dimensions of the lightbox? The plug in works well in Firefox..

  30. eweidner says:

Paul, Sorry for the late response. We’ll check on this.

  31. Estran says:

    I’m using WP 3.8.1.
I published 5 videos from Vimeo to a new page and the links and play buttons don’t work.
    http://www.estran.org/?page_id=6279
    Any idea on this matter?

  32. Estran says:

As there is no answer I’m now using another plugin : YouTube SimpleGallery

  33. eweidner says:

Estran, We’re delighted you’re having success with the YouTube SimpleGallery plugin.
Regarding our plugin, most of the issues arise from javascript conflicts. Many plugins using 3rd party js have issues like that. If you have a sample page live that we can review, we can discover the specific issue you’re experiencing.
Otherwise, thank you for trying our plugin and your feedback.

  34. jean says:

    hello

The button play doesn’t work ! please help me !
    http://www.brigatasinfonica.com/videos/

  35. eweidner says:

    Jean,
Thank you for the note and for using our plugin.
The videos work fine for us on the page you provided (with the exception of the bottom video, which looks like it might be an issue with YouTube). If it is an issue with a specific browser or operating system, it is likely you have some sort of CSS or JS problem with your scripting.
