Turn any WordPress Page into a YouTube or Vimeo Video Gallery

> Here’s an updated blog post on the latest version of the WordPress video gallery plugin. <

Workbox’s WordPress video plugin lets you show multiple thumbnails from YouTube or Vimeo videos on a single page, then plays the videos right on the same page. You can add as many videos as you like, and customize titles, descriptions, order and more.

Here’s the plugin:

Here’s our sample page (no formatting done): http://blog.workbox.com/test-video-plugin/

Here’s how it looks on UC Santa Cruz’s Grow A Farmer website (http://www.growafarmer.org/videos/):

Grow a farmer YouTube and Vimeo videos

You’ll notice that it shows both YouTube and Vimeo videos.

How it works:

1. To add a video to a page: -> WordPress Admin panel -> Videos -> Add New
2. Enter the URL of the video (for example: http://vimeo.com/30967973 or http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IytNBm8WA1c), title and description.
3. The plugin analyzes your video to see if it’s a YouTube or a Vimeo file.
4. The plugin requests the video from YouTube or Vimeo via API.
5. YouTube returns data in XML format. Vimeo returns jSon encoded data.
6. The plugin parses the returned data to get the video file, the title, the tags and the thumbnail.
7. The thumbnails are automatically sized and the video is served in a Lightbox.

Here’s what the admin interface looks like.

    eweidner, thank you for such quick responses! However, I am not sure where the instructions were sent. I haven’t received anything through email.

    Again, thank you very much for your time.

  2. eweidner says:

    You can call the gallery using 3 different methods:

    1. by attaching the gallery to a page.
    2. by using shortcode: example: [workbox_video_YV_list gallery_name="Test Post Gallery"]
    3. or by using a php method: Use a echo workbox_YV_video::showList(); to show a list of videos.

    Please let us know if we got your question right.

    Hello, the plugin is working great in desktop, but in mobile it has many glitches in the way it is displayed. Instead of trying to fix it, I would like for any screen under 800px to open in a new link (which will usually use YouTube app if installed) instead of using the lightbox.

    Is there any easy fix to make this happen?

  4. eweidner says:

    Ricardo – Thank you for the suggestion! Great idea. We’ll check it out and let you know how we decide to handle this. Thanks again!

  5. eweidner says:

    Ricardo, on our end, we tested and seems fine. Can you send us a URL so we can see what’s up? Thanks!

  7. What’s up colleagues, how is the whole thing,
    and what you wish for to say concerning this piece of writing,
    in my view its really amazing for me.

  8. Nigel says:

    I added videoWidth and videoHeight as params to the wistia embed code.

    Changed the work-box_video.php:

    $width = 800; $height = 500;
    $wistia_key = explode(‘?’, $saveArray['url']);
    $wistia_key = explode(‘&’, $wistia_key[1]);
    foreach ($wistia_key as $elem) {
    $wistia_elem = explode(‘=’, $elem);
    if($wistia_elem[0] == “videoWidth”) {
    $width = $wistia_elem[1];
    if($wistia_elem[0] == “videoHeight”) {
    $height = $wistia_elem[1];
    $url = ‘http://fast.wistia.com/oembed?url=’.$saveArray['url'].’&width=’.$width.’&height=’.$height;

    This allows the proper height to be set, now there is a problem that shrinking the screen displays big black borders top and bottom on the video, this means a hack to the jquery.fancybox.js, commenting out the auto lines and adding in a command to alter the height of the video (as wistia don’t seem to do this):

    if ((!e || e.type !== ‘scroll’) || anyway) {
    if (current.autoSize && current.type !== ‘iframe’) {
    // F.inner.height(‘auto’);
    // current.height = F.inner.height();
    if (current.autoResize || anyway) {
    if (current.canGrow && current.type !== ‘iframe’) {
    // F.inner.height(‘auto’);

    Just thought I’d share my alterations.

    Aw, this was a really nice post. Spending some time and
    actual effort to make a great article… but what can I
    say… I hesitate a whole lot and don’t seem to get nearly
    anything done.

  10. After it does that, the Auto Play menu will pop
    up (the same one that comes up whenever you input a CD or DVD).
    The new Samsung champ c3303 price is available in India at Rs.

    One can imagine the advancements in the Micro SD cards
    by knowing the size of 15 mm × 11 mm × 1 mm which were
    in use 10 years ago.

  11. Frank says:

    Like the concept. Could use help on where to set the light box size?
    Biggest problem is an across the board issue with android devices ( won’t play Flash) but someone earlier, was onto a fix for that. Having link open Directly in YouTube on screens smaller than”x” ??
    Anyways where do I set lightbox size?

  12. Steve Goode says:

    I like the way the plugin lets me build my own galleries and doesn’t just take all my Youtube content. However, my videos do not play, I don’t see the actual url being selected I see the url and then @ #movie_02.
    If I could actually play the videos, that would be good. I cannot see any answers to similar questions in the forum and I am not sure where else to ask before I give up.
